How Can I Revitalize my Worn-out Wood Deck?

Are you dealing with a worn or unsightly deck? With time, all decks can deteriorate and lose some of their original beauty, especially in places that see more weather as we do here in Rochester, NY. While rebuilding a deck is an option, revitalizing it through deck resurfacing should be a first consideration.

What is Deck Resurfacing?

Deck resurfacing refers to renovating or rejuvenating an existing structurally sound deck by applying a new surface material or coating over the existing one. This is done to improve the appearance, durability, and functionality of the deck without completely rebuilding it. Resurfacing can involve various techniques such as sanding, staining, painting, or applying a new deck coating or overlay. It helps address issues like weathering, cracks, splinters, or discoloration while providing a fresh look and extending the deck’s lifespan.

Depending on the age and condition of the material, resurfacing a wood deck may be a simple job, or a more extensive one.

Steps to Revitalizing a Wood Deck

Whether hiring a professional contractor or doing the job yourself, here are the basic steps to revitalizing a wood deck.

  1. Inspect the entire deck structure. Look carefully at any place that comes in contact with the ground including posts, stairs, or joists. If the wood is soft or spongy, or if you can sink the tip of a screwdriver into it, you have rot that needs to be addressed. If the rot is extensive, deck replacement may be a better option than resurfacing.
  2. Remove and replace any damaged boards, handrails, or balusters.
  3. Clean Unstained decks with a mixture good for cleaning dirt and removing mildew.

This is recommended home cleaning solution by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Products Laboratory for cleaning a wood deck:

1 qt. household bleach

⅓ cup powdered laundry detergent

3 qts. Warm water

Mix in a 5-gallon bucket. Use a scrub brush to apply the cleaner to the deck. Rinse thoroughly and let dry.

  1. For stained decks, treat with a stain stripper, rinse thoroughly, and let dry.
  2. Pressure wash the deck and let it dry.
  3. Sand the surface, then sweep or vacuum the remaining dust.
  4. Once completely dry, stain or a paint-based protective covering.

Should I Hire a Professional For Deck Refinishing?

The last consideration is whether or not deck resurfacing is a  DIY job or one for a professional local contractor. This depends on several factors, such as the condition of the deck, homeowner skills, available tools, and time involved. This is not something to be taken lightly as the quality of the work can impact the safety of those using the space. The best way to know exactly what needs to be done is to hire a reputable contractor who can identify any structural issues, and develop a plan for cost-effective resurfacing.

Deck resurfacing offers a practical and effective solution for revitalizing a worn-out wood deck. It is a cost-effective option for deck replacement and can significantly extend the life of this beautiful and versatile outdoor space.
